3 Tips to Drive a Golf Ball Further and Straighter

Cobra Golf Men's 2019 F-Max Superlite Offset Driver

1. Select the Right Driver

Huge advances in driver technology have been made in the past few years.

One of the important factors is loft. Sir Isaac Newton invented the branch of mathematics known as the differential calculus in the late 17th century to calculate accurate trajectories for cannon balls and it still applies to golf balls today.

Loft is the angle that the driver's club face makes to the vertical lie of the golf ball as it strikes it.

If you have an older golf driver, it will probably have a loft of 7 or 8 degrees.

A modern driver, as well as being made of higher technology materials, will have a loft of somewhere between 9 and 11.5 degrees, including half-degree graduations.

10.5 degrees seems to be the sweet spot for most average players. It will get the ball into a nice trajectory that gives maximum distance coupled with increased accuracy.

If you have an older driver, consider upgrading to one of our recommendations HERE (opens in new window).

Have You Ever Duffed Your First Shot?

Duffing Your Tee Shot

It was a sunny Saturday morning, a little before 8 a.m., I was on the first hole at The Oaks of St. George Golf Club and beginning my pre-shot routine, when a piercing voice came over the clubhouse loudspeaker:

"Would the gentleman on the woman's tee back up to the men's tee please!"

I could feel every eye on the course looking at me. I was still deep in my routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption.

Again the announcement: "Would the man on the woman's tee kindly back up to the men's tee."

I simply ignored the guy and kept concentrating, when once more, the voice yelled, "Would the man on the woman's tee back up to the men's tee. please?!?!"

Callaway Golf 2020 Mavrik Max Driver

The following Amazon review is from a real purchaser. The product has a consistent 5 star rating.

"A beautiful and smooth driver. This driver is great. Forgiveness is great. I just started golfing one year ago. This was my first big purchase towards golf clubs. I use less arm power to hit the ball with the same distance than my older driver.
Easy of use ++
Club strike ball sound ++ (sounds natural metallic sound)
Improved my fareway percentage + (it did improve from my older driver) 1 out of 6 vs. 1 out of 10. Disclaimer I still slice like crazy at times.
I own mavrick max."

The manufacturer says:

Our easiest to hit Mavrik driver features two interchangeable weights for a MAX forgiveness or MAX draw configuration.

Premium lightweight materials create an ultra-light shaft design making it easier to generate power without compromising stability. A high trajectory shaft offering players ultimate forgiveness through maximum distance and tightened shot dispersion.

The new face architecture required FS2S titanium, an extremely strong material that’s 6 grams lighter than traditional titanium to promote optimal speed, forgiveness, and spin robustness.

Two internal Jailbreak bars connect the sole and crown to promote fast ball speed, and the significantly lighter carbon crown allows us to redistribute weight for higher MOI.

We also used A. I. to design a sophisticated internal titanium rib system that fine-tunes the head to produce a deeper, highly satisfying sound.

TaylorMade Golf M5 Driver (460cc)

TaylorMade Golf M5 Driver (460cc)

This is an Amazon review from a genuine purchaser of this club:

"This club is amazing. Coming from an SLDR, the improvement in my shot is immense. Having hit the M3 Driver last year, this years does show improvements. The sound of this club at contact is amazing, and will let you know when you make a great shot. You can really feel your shot with the club and will give you feedback as to how well your shot was without even watching the ball flight. The mis-hits on this club are still very accurate with Twist Face and the adjustability makes this club able to fit to a variety of swings. I can't stress enough the importance to be fitted, go to a local store and get fitted for the club, know what loft and shaft you need for this club, it makes a difference in the way it performs for you. In my comparison having tested both M5 and M6 with the same shaft and loft; I found the M6 to feel as if I have nothing on the end of the shaft. It was far too light in my opinion and this feels much heavier. This is all based on personal presence though, hit both and see what you prefer. The M6 is more forgiving of a club due to the weight being placed in the back, but the same can be achieved with this club by placing the weight in the furthest back position. You can feel the quality of this club from the headcover to the club itself. I found myself hitting the ball more consistent than ever before with this club, and the view of the club at approach is amazing with the matte black top. Overall I would highly recommend this club, It is an investment but well worth it in my case, get fitted, try M5 and M6 and then make a decision based on how each fits your game and swing; you won't be disappointed either way!"
